In the former Mullewa Ward, outside the townsites, the City of Greater Geraldton says you currently don’t need building approval for Class 10 buildings, and pools and spas don’t need a barrier.

If the regulations change, there’s a 12 month transition from the date they take effect, and the City says that date isn’t known yet. Existing Class 10 buildings wouldn’t need approval. Pool owners would get 12 months to put a barrier around a pool that hasn’t got one.

Western Power says sea salt and dust build up on insulators near the coast. Add light drizzle or a misty morning and electricity can track across them, heat the pole top until it smoulders, and cut the power.
In 2024 it set out to coat the insulators on 410 poles along the coast between Geraldton and Port Denison with silicone to stop that happening.
So a blackout on a damp morning may be the network’s problem. If the whole street is dark, that’s Western Power’s job. If it’s one house and the neighbours have power, that’s one for a sparky.
