Western Power says Kalgoorlie-Boulder and the Eastern Goldfields run off a single 220kV line more than 650 km long, and that severe weather and bushfires have hit it before. When it’s out, Synergy’s two gas turbine generators at West Kalgoorlie can back it up.
Storms still get through. In September 2023 high winds brought down poles and wires, with more than 100 hazards in Kalgoorlie and around 6,000 Goldfields homes and businesses without power. A supercell in January 2024 did what the WA Government called unprecedented damage to the network.
More backup is planned. In July 2026 the WA Government announced a memorandum of understanding for Parkeston Power Station to supply up to 70MW during transmission outages, and a vanadium battery is funded to give up to 10 hours of backup once it’s built.
