Can your iPhone or Android answer calls for you with AI?
Partly. Newer phones can screen callers and turn a voicemail into text as it’s left. None of them answers as your business or books the job. Here’s what each brand does in Australia.
The short answer
Partly. An iPhone, a Pixel or a new Samsung can answer a call from a number it doesn’t know and ask who’s calling and why. You see the answer on screen, then decide whether to talk. They can also show a voicemail as text while the caller is still leaving it.
They won’t run the call for you. On the Apple, Google and Samsung pages we read, none of these features answers in your business name, books a job or texts the caller back on its own. You still choose whether to pick up, and you still ring back.
For a phone that rings a few times a day, that’s often plenty. For new customers ringing while you’re under a house, it’s a better voicemail.
What each phone can do in Australia
These come with the phone. What’s in your settings depends on the model and the software version.

What your phone still leaves to you
Every feature in that table ends with you looking at the screen. Screening tells you who’s ringing and why. Live Voicemail and Take a Message tell you what they said. Then you pick up, or ring back later.
Google’s Take a Message plays a greeting you can record yourself, so it can say your business name. It still just takes a message. Samsung’s Text call comes closest to answering for you, and you type every reply.
A new customer’s number isn’t in your contacts yet, so new customers are exactly the calls that get screened. Apple also has a Silence setting that sends every unsaved number straight to voicemail. That’s handy for spam, and less handy for a stranger with water coming through the ceiling.
When your phone’s features are enough
If most of your calls are regulars who’ll happily leave a message, screening plus Live Voicemail or Take a Message covers it. You see who rang and why without stopping work.
If the real problem is spam, these were built for it. Google says Call Screen hangs up on calls it decides are spam, and Samsung says its call screening can end spam and scam calls for you.
If you can usually check your phone between jobs and ring back the same day, you may not need to pay anyone for this, us included.
What an AI receptionist adds
An AI receptionist deals with the call, then tells you what happened. These are the parts your phone doesn’t do.
Answers as your business
It picks up in your business name, says it’s your assistant, tells callers the call may be recorded and gets the job details.
Books the job
Routine jobs go into ServiceM8, Fergus, Google Calendar or Outlook at times you’re free, with a reminder the day before.
Texts back missed calls
A caller you miss gets a text from your business name.
Takes the after-hours calls
It answers any hour, so the 9pm calls get dealt with while you’re having tea.
Sends you the emergencies
Urgent jobs are texted to you straight away, then it rings you.
It doesn’t put calls through to you. It takes their number and you ring back, and emergencies come to you by text, then a call.
Keeping your phone’s features and an assistant
You can have both. Ours can ring your phone first and only pick up when you don’t, or answer every call. A couple of phone settings can get in the way, though.
iPhone: Telstra says Live Voicemail catches missed calls on the phone itself, saves their messages there instead of in MessageBank, and keeps the ring time at 15 seconds. If missed calls are meant to forward to an assistant, turn Live Voicemail off in Settings, Apps, Phone.
Pixel: Google says not to use automatic Call Screen if you forward calls, because screened calls won’t be forwarded. It also says to turn off Take a Message if your phone company’s forwarding doesn’t work with it.
Whatever the phone, once it’s set up, borrow a mate’s phone, ring yourself and see who picks up.
Where we fit
Ours is for when the calls you can’t get to are new jobs, and you want them answered and booked while you work.
It’s A$299 a month for a sole trader, with 100 minutes and 150 texts included, plus A$299 once for setup. No GST is added, and it’s month to month. You keep your number and forward calls to your assistant’s own Australian mobile number.
We set it up for you and keep an eye on what it says. To hear it first, ring the demo on 0485 000 166. It answers as Mario’s Plumbing, a plumber we made up.
Questions about AI on your own phone
Is there an AI answering service for iPhone?
Built in, Apple has Call Screening, which asks unknown callers their name and reason before your iPhone rings, and Live Voicemail, which shows a message as text while it’s left. Apple lists both for English (Australia) on iOS 27. Neither answers in your business name or books a job. AI receptionists that do are separate services, and you forward your iPhone’s calls to them.
Can my Android phone answer calls with AI?
Google Pixels and Samsung’s Galaxy S26 phones can screen calls: the assistant answers, asks who’s calling and why, and shows you the answer. On the Samsung, Text call lets you type replies that an AI voice reads to the caller. You still decide what happens next. Google lists manual Call Screen on other Android phones in the US and Canada only.
Does Google Call Screen work in Australia?
Yes. Google lists Australia for both automatic and manual Call Screen on Pixel phones. Take a Message with live text works on Pixel 6 and newer in Australian English. Direct My Call doesn’t work here: Google lists only the US and UK.
Does iPhone Call Screening work in Australia?
Yes. Apple’s iOS 27 feature list includes English (Australia) for Call Screening, Live Voicemail and Hold Assist. Live Translation on phone calls isn’t listed for English (Australia).
Can Telstra turn my voicemail into a text?
Yes, with Message2Txt. A caller who can’t get through leaves a 10-second message and it reaches you as an SMS. Telstra says it may not be accurate if the caller is hard to understand, the voice message isn’t kept, and it’s off while MessageBank is on. To turn it on, text DCF On to 144.
Do I need an AI receptionist if my phone screens calls?
Not always. Screening tells you who rang and why, and that’s enough when you can ring back between jobs. If new customers ring while you can’t pick up, an AI receptionist answers as your business and books the job before you’ve rung back.
