This is the oldest part of the city. Albury's town plan was gazetted in 1839, and the first survey set the streets that still frame the centre: Wodonga Place to the west, Hume Street to the north, Kiewa Street to the east and Nurigong Street to the south. Since 1920 house numbers have counted out from the corner of Dean and Olive Streets, which is number 500.
At the 2021 Census the suburb had 2,173 occupied homes. About a third were townhouses or semis, 39% were rented and the median age was 45. AlburyCity lists 16 heritage conservation areas across the council area, and older houses are the ones most likely to still have ceramic fuses and no safety switches.

Ceramic fuses in the older streets
If the board still has ceramic fuses, Tomo can replace it with circuit breakers and safety switches and label every circuit. You get the price first and the NSW Certificate of Compliance Electrical Work when it is finished.
Four in ten homes here are rented. In NSW a hardwired smoke alarm has to be repaired or replaced by a licensed electrician, and a faulty one must be fixed within two business days of the landlord finding out.
Who looks after the power lines in central Albury?
Essential Energy runs the network on the NSW side, so outages and fallen lines go to them on 13 20 80. If the streetlights and the neighbours still have power, the problem is inside your place, and that's a job for Tomo.
How do I find out if my house is in a heritage conservation area?
AlburyCity's heritage page points to the heritage maps in the Albury Local Environmental Plan 2010. The plan lists 245 local heritage items, 12 state heritage items and 16 conservation areas.
What do NSW landlords have to do about smoke alarms?
Check them every year, put new removable batteries in every year, and replace each alarm within 10 years of when it was made, or sooner if the maker says so.
Will I get a certificate for work in Albury?
Yes. In NSW the work is tested and you get a uniquely numbered Certificate of Compliance Electrical Work for every job.
How soon can you get to the CBD?
It's about nine minutes from Tomo's base in Thurgoona. Emergencies around Albury-Wodonga are usually reached within two hours, and booked jobs get a two-hour arrival window.
